ASTM D1149

Rubber materials are used in many products and will deteriorate with ozone exposure. When creating rubber components or products, testing their resistance to cracking from this exposure becomes critical. This test standard meets this need, and VTEC Laboratories offers the expertise and equipment to perform your ASTM D1149 tests to industry specifications.

VTEC Laboratories — a Trusted Name in Ozone Exposure Testing

Throughout our more than 35 years of service, VTEC has grown to become one of the industry's leading testing companies. We've helped both major corporations and small manufacturers ensure their rubber products' excellence and compliance with our extensive ozone exposure testing capabilities.

Along with our expertise, we're proud to be accredited by ISO, A2LA and other major regulatory bodies. That means our tests — including our ASTM D1149 ozone exposure test — meet the full requirements set by groups like the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the ASTM. We can even provide customized testing that still meets all the requirements of these organizations.

With services like these, we make it easy for you to find every testing service you might need under one roof. Not only will we test your materials, but we'll also make sure you fully understand the results so that you know how to best design and construct your products.

What Is ASTM D1149 Ozone Exposure Testing?

Ozone Exposure Testing is a standard of test methods set by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) that evaluates the resistance of various rubber products when exposed to different levels of ozone. This standardized test can determine whether a rubber product is ready for consumer use, and it is useful during product research and development. A rubber material's resistance is determined after testing by its physical appearance and the severity of the cracks that appear on its surface.

Materials undergoing the testing process outlined in ASTM D1149 are exposed to ozone in a time- and exposure-accelerated test. This test predicts a material's reaction under various surface tensile strain conditions in an atmosphere with controlled levels of ozone concentration. However, because it is accelerated and does not actually expose the material to ozone long-term, results in the real world might vary.

To conduct the test, we'll place your material on one of our ozone test chambers. These control the environment and accurately measure ozone levels. Then, we'll test it using either a dynamic strain or static strain method. These proven test methods subject your material to either varying maximum tensile strength levels or one continual strain over a fixed period. At the end of the test, we'll thoroughly check the material for its integrity and explain the results to your team.

Some materials that commonly receive ASTM D1149 testing include:

  • Vulcanized rubber
  • Extruded or molded soft rubber
  • Rubber compounds
  • Electrical components
