ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test

Many metal and coated metal products are exposed to corrosive environments throughout their lifetime. As you conduct research and prepare your product's design, testing its resistance to corrosion through ASTM B117 salt spray testing is essential. VTEC Laboratories offers salt spray tests as part of our extensive physical testing abilities. We lead the way in standardized material testing with capabilities like our B117 test labs for businesses and federal agencies across the country.

What Is the ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test?

The ASTM B117 standard was designed to guide technicians in testing coated metals' and alloys' resistance to the corrosion caused by salt water. It's one of the most commonly recognized practices for salt spray testing, adopted by numerous companies and even government organizations like the U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Energy. At VTEC, we've provided salt spray testing to diverse industries — including military, paints and coatings, automotive and aerospace — for more than 30 years.

In ASTM B117 testing, specimens are exposed to corrosion using a chamber that accelerates time and salt exposure. The chamber's temperature and the solution's pH levels typically remain the same throughout the test. The test's length depends on factors like the given material, product and intended use. When the testing apparatus exposes the materials to continual salt spray, technicians can use the test information along with other factors to determine their relative corrosion resistance.

During the salt spray test, we'll place your specimens in one of our specialized chambers designed to B117 specifications. This chamber is pre-prepared to the optimal operating temperature — usually around 35 degrees Celsius — and rate of fall-out. The machine will then continually spray the test solution, which is commonly made using a combination of five percent sodium chloride and 95 percent water. The solution's pH is maintained at a neutral level between 6.5 and 7.2.

After testing the material, we can measure its corrosion resistance by visually examining the specimen. Our resulting report will consider the visual results, any weight loss or gain and similar factors. With this report, we'll help you understand the results of your salt spray test and how you can use these results throughout your products' research, design and manufacturing.
