ASTM E119 Test

Standard Flammability Test Method for Construction Materials

Due to organizational, federal or local fire and safety codes, there is a host of construction materials, cables, furniture and other building products that need to obtain a fire-resistance rating before being used or installed. By far one of the most useful material tests that are regularly employed by fire and flammability test labs to accomplish this rating is the ASTM E119 fire testing of building construction and materials.

As a fully certified ASTM testing lab, VTEC Laboratories is highly qualified to carry out the ASTM E119 fire test to thoroughly evaluate the length of time specific test materials can passively contain fire while retaining the integrity of their structural purpose.

What is an ASTM E119 Test?

An ASTM E119 flammability test is the standard method for the fire testing of building construction and materials. The test evaluates the duration that various building elements withstand and contain a fire while retaining structural integrity. It is a comparative assessment of your materials' fire resistance when exposed to standard fire conditions.

Building materials and structures suitable for testing include:

  • Beams
  • Girders
  • Columns
  • Slabs
  • Walls and partitions
  • Masonry units
  • Composite assemblies

How is the ASTM E119 Flammability Test Conducted?

To conduct the ASTM E119 test, a sample of the test material or a pre-constructed portion of it, as in the case of walls, partitions, flooring, ceilings and roofing, is placed in the test furnace. Depending on the orientation of the materials, either a vertical furnace is used in the case of walls, columns and partitions, or a horizontal furnace is used in the case of floors, ceilings and roofs.

Under a timed evaluation, a mixture of gas and air are ignited and fed into the furnace assembly. For typical one- or two-hour rating tests, the internal temperature of the furnace must rise according to pre-set temperatures. Standard temperature levels are 1300 degrees Fahrenheit after five minutes, 1400 degrees Fahrenheit after 15 minutes and a minimum of 1550 degrees Fahrenheit after 30 minutes, and so on.

At the conclusion of the test, materials are checked for their structural integrity, especially in the case of load-bearing assemblies. And when required by certain fire and building codes, materials can also be tested for their heat transmission, as well as their ability to withstand a stream of water from a fire hose following Practice E2226.

How Long Does it Take to Conduct an ASTM E119 Test?

Once we’re provided with all necessary samples and paperwork, we can complete the ASTM E119 fire test and deliver a full report with the results within two weeks — that is the quickest turnaround time in the flammability testing industry. Plus, you have the option of thorough full-scale testing on a 10-foot by 10-foot sample or a small-scale test requiring only a three-foot by three-foot sample, which is more economical.
