ASTM D790 Test Services

ASTM D790 is one of the most commonly used materials tests in the plastics industry. It measures several properties related to material stiffness, helping you select a material that will support your required loads without bending.

What Is the ASTM D790 Test?

The ASTM D790 test determines the flexural (bending) properties of reinforced and unreinforced plastic, electrical insulation materials and high-modulus composites. The test uses a universal testing machine and a three-point bend fixture to bend material at a rate proportional to the test specimen's depth. The test material is typically a rectangular bar molded directly or cut from sheets, shapes or plates.

ASTM D790 tests the following properties:

  • Flexural modulus: Flexural modulus, also known as tangent modulus, measures the material's stiffness. It is the slope of the initial linear portion on the load-deflection curve.
  • Secant modulus: Secant modulus is the slope between the origin point and a predetermined point on the load-deflection curve.
  • Chord modulus: Chord modulus is the slope between two predetermined points on the load-deflection curve.
  • Flexural stress: Flexural stress is the point at which a specimen breaks during the bend test.
  • Flexural strength: Flexural strength is the maximum flexural stress measured during a bend test.

How Do We Conduct the ASTM D790 Bend Test?

We use one of two test methods outlined in the standard to test your materials. Test Method A uses a strain rate of 0.01 mm per minute and tests for flexural properties — particularly flexural modulus. Test Method B uses a strain rate of 0.10 mm per minute to test thicker materials for flexural strength.

The standard flexural test specimen size is 3.2 mm. However, we can test various shapes and sizes to accommodate your specific requirements.

During the test, we lay your test bar on two support spans and use a loading nose to place your load midway between the two supports. The test ends when your test bar is bent to 0.5% strain or it breaks.
