ASTM D412 Test Services

Rubbers and thermoplastics are essential materials in a diverse range of industrial applications. The ASTM D412 is one of the most helpful materials tests for determining whether these materials can withstand the stretching forces they may be subject to in your application.

What Is the ASTM D412 Test?

The ASTM D412 test evaluates the tensile properties of rubber and thermoplastic materials. It measures a material's elasticity under tensile strain using a universal testing machine.

ASTM D412 tests for numerous tensile properties, including:

  • Tensile stress: The amount of stress required to stretch the sample at a given elongation.
  • Tensile strength: The maximum tensile stress applied to a sample before it ruptures.
  • Tensile set: The extent to which a material is deformed after being stretched for a short period. It is expressed as a percentage of the material's original length.

How We Perform the ASTM D412 Test

We perform the ASTM D412 test using one of two methods, depending on your sample shape. Test Method A is used for straight and dumbbell- or dog bone-shaped samples. It is the most common test for rubbers and elastomers. Test Method B is a less common test used for cut ring samples.

We use a universal testing machine to perform both test methods. We begin by marking your sample at each end. We then place it in specialized grips and fixtures that stretch it to the specified elongation for 10 minutes. After that, we release the sample and allow it to relax for 10 minutes. Once the relaxation period is over, we measure the final distance between the marks. This measurement is used to determine the tensile set, a percentage calculated by dividing the sample's final length by its initial length.

Why Choose Our ASTM D412 Test Services?

VTEC Laboratories has provided elastomer tensile strength tests for over 30 years. We are an ISO-accredited facility with state-of-the-art equipment and rapid testing abilities.

One of the biggest reasons for inconsistent ASTM D412 test results is improper sample preparation. At VTEC Laboratories, we have an extensive selection of sample die cutters to ensure we cut your samples precisely and uniformly each time. We offer sample cutters for straight, dumbbell and ring cut samples outlined in the standard.

We understand that quick testing turnarounds are crucial to your operations. You can count on us to deliver your analyses and a complete report within two weeks — the fastest turnaround time in the industry. We can also accommodate rush projects in some instances.

Your comprehensive report will include our complete evaluation and suggestions for resolving any issues we may detect. With our thorough testing and reporting, you'll gain the information you need to choose the right materials for your application.
