NES 713

Naval Engineering Standard 713

NES 713 is a popular and useful test for aiding in quality control, as well as in research and development. It helps determine the toxicity levels of material specimens of a relatively small size.

Since 1982, we’ve earned our reputation as a testing industry leader by continuously supplying reliable results on every test we conduct. What’s more, when you work with us, you have the added confidence that comes from working with an ISO 17020, 17025 and 17065 accredited laboratory, as well as a U.S. Navy/NAVSEA/NSWC approved vendor.

Whether it’s NES 713 or customized onsite testing, we have the technical knowledge and professional experience you need for quality control. If we can answer any of your questions or if you’d like a free consultation, fill out our contact form or call 718-542-8248.

What is the NES 713 Toxicity Test?

Naval engineering standard 713 helps professionals charged with designing, manufacturing and ensuring the quality of the latest maritime equipment determine the potential toxicity of smoke, gases and particles that are produced when a small specimen of material is burned under controlled laboratory conditions.

NES 713 is an essential test for personnel safety. Also, it provides governing bodies and manufacturers with a toxicity index of the various molecules that are released as a result of the combustion process.

Developed as part of the U.K.’s naval engineering standards, NES 713 is at its a core a test that determines how toxic a specimen is in comparison to other known materials’ toxicity levels. To accomplish precise molecular measurements from small specimens, a sample is thoroughly burned in a control chamber containing plentiful amounts of air. NES 713 is capable of capturing results that allow for the comparison of both synthetic and natural test materials and is an apt test for professionals tasked with quality control and/or research and development of materials used in naval equipment.

While the test is useful in specifying the toxicity of a product or raw material, the characteristics of NES 713 combustion alone do not adequately assess a specimen’s risk as a fire hazard when subjected to the real conditions of a fire. However, a specimen’s toxicity levels on the toxicity index are accurate and trustworthy results.

NES 713 and the Toxicity Index

The toxicity index is a summation in numerical form of the toxicity factor of individual gases as they’re produced during the process of total combustion of a test specimen under controlled conditions. The toxicity factors are determined by calculating how much of a specific gas is produced as the result of burning 100 grams of test material in a volume of one cubic meter of air.

Test Equipment

At VTEC, we only use the highest quality testing equipment, so the results you receive are always dependable and timely. For NES 713, our equipment involves a strong fire-retardant combustion chamber, a separate combustion control unit and a highly accurate gas analysis system. Throughout all stages of combustion, full control is kept over ignition, burn times, gas reactions and air extraction.
