What Is the NFPA 701 Test?
The NFPA 701 test involves mounting a fabric sample in a controlled test chamber with an open flame. After exposing the fabric to the open flame for a certain period, we assess the char length, which is the length of damage caused by a flame moving upward. We also assess the flaming residue, or the material fragments that fall to the bottom of the test chamber.
Your fabric samples will pass if they:
- Have a char length less than 6.5 inches.
- Have an after-flame of fewer than 2 seconds.
- Do not continue to flame after reaching the floor.
NFPA 701 Testing Methods
We test fabric samples based on the two testing methods outlined in NFPA 701. Test Method 1 is a small-scale test for less dense, single-layer materials, such as those used for many standard window treatments. Test Method 2 applies to denser, multilayer fabrics, such as plastic films, lined curtains and vinyl-coated fabric. Test Method 2 typically requires larger samples to account for variations in the way heavier fabrics react to fire exposure.
