What Is ASTM C518 Testing?

This is a building code requirement for insulation and systems.

ASTM C518's scope extends to a wide range of materials, including but not limited to insulation products, building materials, textiles and composites. This standard test method provides a reliable, consistent approach to thermal resistance testing, often referred to as R-value testing, by measuring how well a material resists heat flow under steady-state conditions. ASTM C518 Standard Testing Method

The testing procedure involves placing a specimen between two plates in a heat flow meter apparatus. One plate is heated while the other is cooled, creating a controlled temperature gradient across the specimen. Heat flows from the warm plate to the cool one through the sample. The heat flow rate and temperature difference across the specimen are measured to calculate its thermal conductivity, thermal transmittance and thermal resistance.
