What Is the ASTM D3359 Test?
The ASTM D3359 test, also known as the Cross Hatch adhesion test, uses special pressure-sensitive tape to assess film coating adhesion. This test is often applied after products are immersed in different liquids or go through aging processes such as UV testing, accelerated aging or salt spray. The ASTM D3359 tape test ensures the film coating properly adheres to metallic substrates.
How Is the ASTM D3359 Test Conducted?
The ASTM D3359 test measures how much coating is damaged or taken off with the removal of the pressure-sensitive tape. ASTM D3359 is more suited to collect qualitative data than quantitative information, as it aims to discover the strength of adhesion rather than numeral data.
This test uses two methods to evaluate the adhesion quality to a substrate. Test Method A is more suitable for in the field, while Test Method B is best used for lab testing. Below are descriptions of how we conduct each test:
- Test Method A: Our scientists make an X-cut on the test material through a film coating. Pressure-sensitive tape is then applied to the cut and removed after 90 seconds. Based on the integrity of the coating, we evaluate the adhesion on a scale of 0 to 5.
- Test Method B: A crosshatch pattern, with either six or eleven cuts in both directions, is made in the film. Pressure-sensitive tape is then placed over the cuts and removed after 90 seconds. Our scientists evaluate the coating through comparison and rate it on a scale of 0 to 5.
