ASTM D2240

Rubber and plastic are used in many products across a vast range of industries, and understanding their shore hardness is important for using these materials in applications. Measuring shore hardness, which is resistance to indentation, with the ASTM D2240 test will determine the best material to use based on the estimated pressure it must withstand.

What Is the ASTM D2240 Test?

The ASTM D2240 hardness test is a great way to measure the indentation hardness of substances such as thermoplastic elastomers, vulcanized rubber, some plastics, and elastomeric, cellular, and gel-like materials. The test method uses the standardized indentation head of a durometer device.

The testing specimen of a product will normally be at least 6.4 millimeters (1/4 inch) thick and be subject to five readings. ASTM D2240 uses the following types of durometers to test materials:

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • DO
  • E
  • M
  • O
  • OO
  • OOO
  • OOO-S
  • R

At VTEC Laboratories, our durometer hardness tests typically call for Type A and Type D scales, which are the most common options and cover hardnesses from rubbers to nylons. Type A is ideal for softer materials, while the D scale is designed for harder elements. This standard is not suitable for testing coated fabrics.

How We Conduct ASTM D2240 Testing

Our ASTM D2240 test services measure the depth of the indentation, which is dependent on the hardness of the material, its viscoelastic properties, the type of presser foot and the length of the test. We use a Shore durometer to measure these indentations.

The testing procedure is pretty straightforward. We place the material on a flat surface. Then, we press the spring-loaded indentor of a Shore durometer into the rubber at a parallel angle while remaining level with the material.

We use our ASTM D2240 testing to evaluate initial hardness, in which the value is recorded within one second of firm contact. We also test for timed hardness, where force is placed on the material over time and the measurement is collected following the entire test duration.
