IEEE 383 Testing Services

IEEE 383 Testing

Fires in the workplace can lead to injuries and major property losses. To make sure you have all the proper safety measures in place, it's important to test the flame and heat resistance of your equipment and cables.

If you work with consumer technology, information technology or electronics, your business likely follows the IEEE standards of safety and quality.

VTEC Labs’ IEEE 383 vertical flame test is designed to protect your operators and assets by ensuring your cables are flame-resistant.

Your Trusted IEEE 383 Test Lab

At VTEC, we are accredited by multiple organizations that allow us to conduct a wide range of performance and safety tests.

In addition to providing fire and flammability safety assessments, we also offer weathering tests, materials tests and chemical tests, among others. Our testing services help businesses across numerous industries maintain compliance with the latest safety standards and regulations.

As a provider of high-quality testing services operating since 1982, we know how to identify strengths and weaknesses when we see them. With extensive testing experience behind us, we're prepared to deliver unique testing solutions for business leaders who need reliable results.

Need Reliable Testing?

If you're looking for a provider that offers IEEE 383 testing, we offer a wide variety of options you can trust.

Our fast turnaround time also helps you maximize productivity and safety in the workplace. We will make sure your cables are equipped to handle your different market demands and applications.

What Is the IEEE 383 Vertical Flame Test?

This is an assessment designed to determine a cable's level of flame propagation resistance. Flame-resistant cables and wires are less likely to spread fire if exposed to it.

The resistance helps reduce the risk of damage if an accident occurs. Our IEEE 383 testing services determine whether your cables will deliver the intended performance during an emergency.

If your new cables comply with the IEEE 383 standard, you can trust them for use in power plants and other industrial facilities.

How the Test Is Done

Here, we suspend test cables in the air with a rack and place a burner underneath them. After exposing the cables or wires to flames for 20 minutes, we then evaluate the effectiveness of their flame-retardant capabilities based on the damage sustained.

The IEEE 383 test offers reliable, reproducible results thanks to the advanced methods and equipment we use during testing.

This test is ideal for cables and wires that will be used in harsh industrial environments with frequent heat exposure. The IEEE 383 flame-resistant cable test now refers the user to the IEEE 1202, which VTEC performs as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does VTEC Labs test to both the original IEEE 383 and the updated IEEE 1202 standard?

Yes, we do. We can perform legacy IEEE 383 vertical flame tests as well as the current IEEE 1202 procedure, which refines sample preparation and burner conditions for more consistent results. As our client, you may request either, depending on your requirements.

What information should I include when submitting cable samples?

To help our engineers set up your flame-resistant cable test quickly, please include the cable type, insulation and jacket materials, conductor size, intended application (power, control, instrumentation, etc.) and any customer or military specification you must meet.

How many samples are needed for an IEEE 383 test?

Typically, three cable lengths (each about 24 inches / 610 mm) are required for configuration. However, special constructions may need longer sections to maintain accurate spacing and heat exposure.

How long are test records retained at VTEC Laboratories?

All data, such as raw readings, photographs and calibration logs, are archived for a minimum of five years. You can request certified copies or data extracts anytime within that retention period.
